Louise's guide to Stockholm


Swedish House Mafia, Lisbet Salander, H&M, ACNE, Björn Borg, the Royal Castle and Alexander Skarsgård are only few of the exiting things associated with out lovely capital Stockholm!
Stockholm is located only 45min by train from Uppsala; so it is a must to visit once you’re here! The city center is easy to get around, and as Stockholm is built on different islands; it’s a pleasure experiencing the city walking as the distances are not too far and you get to see a lot along the way.
Here are some tips on things to do, eat, drink and shop. All the links are to the English versions of the websites; some of them have French as an option as well.

Eat
Cafés /Lunchplaces
One thing you will realize is that we do have a lot of Cafés everywhere. We love to drink coffee and eat cinnamon buns; it’s like a sport for usJ. So, you might think that this is a like any coffee break at Starbucks, but no! We are so passionate about it and we do spend hours doing it, in fact we love it so much that there is a verb for doing it, FIKA. You have to experience a real Swedish FIKA at least once you’re in Sweden. We do have many café chains like Starbucks (Wayne’s Coffee, Coffehouse By George, Espresso House) but here are the best cafes you cannot miss:
  • Saturnus. Address: Eriksbergsgatan 6. (known for their huge cinnamon buns)
  • Vetekatten (one of Stockholm’s oldest cafes). Address: Kungsgatan 55 (tube: T-centralen)
  • Foam. Address: Karlavägen 75. (good lunch option)
  • Mocco. Adress: Nybrogatan 66. (good lunch option as well)
  • Blueberry. Several locations in Stockholm. (very healthy and good on the go, smoothies and juices are amazing!)
  • Café Sirap. Address: Surbrunnsgatan 31A. (great brunch and breakfast option)
  • Café String. Address: Nytorgsgatan 38. (very cozy)



Drink and dine
The Swedish Government holds a monopoly on the Alcohol market in Sweden. Therefore, you will not be able to purchase any alcohol in 7- Eleven, other off licenses or grocery shops. However, the shops where you can purchase alcohol that are owned and controlled by the government and are called ‘Systembolaget’. These are only open Mon-Saturday usually 10-18. You have to be over 20 years old to purchase, and they will ask you for your ID if you looks younger than 30. So, if you are planning to booze it up, you have to remember to buy it on time and to bring your ID.
Also, as Sweden has one of the highest VAT of alcohol beverages in the world, drinking in restaurants and bars will be more expensive than what you are used to. Don’t be surprised if they measure the alcohol when you order, cocktails are made and ordered as 4cl drinks or 6cl drinks. A beer or a glass of wine will cost approx 80 kr, while a cocktail costs approx +100kr.
In general, bars and restaurants are very strict serving alcohol to people who looks young, so always bring your ID just in case even though you might not be planning of going to a nightclub!

Restaurants
  • Riche, great bar and restaurant with Swedish-French fusion food. Riche bar on the right hand side of the restaurant called ‘Lilla Baren’ usually have dj’s on Fridays and Saturdays, this is my favorite bar in Stockholm! http://riche.se/en-us/start
  • Rolfs Kök (if you like to try new things, like pike or sheep testicles, this is the right place, the food is amazing and the restaurant has one Michelin star). Address: Tegnergatan 41.
  • Grill (for all the meat lovers!) Address: Drottninggatan 89.
  • Prinsen (Stockholm’s oldest restaurant with authentic Swedish food, def worth a visit!)
  • Gondolen (amazing view over Stockholm) http://www.eriks.se/start.asp?lang=2
  • Nytorget Urban Deli (very East London, New York vibe). Address: Nytorget 4.
  • Fredsgatan 12 (one of Stocholms best restaurants, same owner of Grill and Orangeriet/Kungsholmen) Address: Rödbotorget 2.

Amazing places to drink and dine during the summer


Shop
  • Stockholm has amazing shopping so here follow some tips on nice stores.
  • Götgatan/Södermalm: in this area you can find lot’s of shops, from vintage shops, to sneaker stores and a lot of Swedish design stores.
  • Svenskt Tenn (Swedish interior design known for their prints and textiles)
  • ACNE (if you like fashion, this is a must. The shop on Norrmalmstorg is the biggest one, while there is a small outlet shop on St Eriksplan where you can find amazing bargains!)
  • Monki (high street brand with good prices and fun clothing)
  • Whyred (a brand a bit like ACNE, def. worth a visit!)
  • Weekday (shop with different brands eg Cheap Monday)
  • Mood Gallerian (newly open mall with shops, cafes and restaurants)
  • PUB Gallerian (department stores filled with lots of Scandinavian brands and they have an amazing interior department on the top floor)
  • Biblioteksgatan (street with stores e.g. Filippa K, SOLO, WESC, Efva Attling etc)
  • Åhlens City (department store)
  • Nordiska Kompaniet (department store)
  • Designtorget (interior design)
  • Design House Stockholm (interior design)
